Shallow Wells

Is anyone on the lake using a shallow well to irrigate their lawns and bushes?  I had a shallow well installed (57′ deep) and some of my plants started loosing their leaves several weeks after.  Have been told it could be a fungus, which I am hoping it is.  However, was told by a water guy today that my well might be picking up mold spores from the lake that have migrated down to that level.

Just checking to see if anyone has experienced similar issues with their plants or bushes.

Thanks in advanced for any input.

Cheers, Denz

  • We have a 43 foot well that was installed 34 years ago. We use it for irrigation and an efficient heat exchanger for our Geothermal Heat Pump. It puts out 35 Gallons per minute and works fine. We have not had an issue with our plants nor the heat pump based on the quality of the well water.

I would advise checking the frequency, the amount of each zone, and the times that you’re watering. Sometimes too much watering can cause more issues than not watering enough. Check with Pat Allen Irrigation ‭(912) 313-2805‬. He’s one of the best guys on the Islands for this kind of question.

Several lake home owners suck water out of the lake to irrigate their lawns. Although very innovative, I’m glad not every home owners participates in this practice.

I wish you the best in solving your problem.

  • Our water on Talahi is very reasonable in comparison to what others pay through Savannah’s water supply. This year we had a lot of rain so the lake stayed full. Years with less rain lead to low levels and more homeowners sucking up the water for irrigation. Let’s preserve our lake for all of us!
